Using Strata with Wwise

If you're using Strata collections to create sounds for Wwise projects, the following sections describe the recommended workflow. With this method, you can quickly transfer files back and forth between REAPER and Wwise, making it easy to iterate on your design.

Transferring Files from REAPER to Wwise

  1. If you haven't already installed ReaWwise, follow the instructions here: Installing ReaWwise.

  2. In Wwise, open the project into which you want to transfer audio files.

  3. In the Project Explorer, select a destination.

  4. From the REAPER menu bar, click Extensions > ReaWwise.

    The ReaWwise dialog opens.

  5. Confirm that ReaWwise is connected to your Wwise project. If Wwise is running on a different computer, you might need to set an IP address or port number from the gear button in ReaWwise.

  6. In ReaWwise, you can specify a Wwise structure and save it as a preset for future use. Each object of the structure you create in ReaWwise can be named automatically using the REAPER $Wildcards. In Strata projects, the naming of regions, markers, projects, tracks, an so on,has been carefully considered so that it is useful when creating Wwise hierarchies.

    For example:

    • The $region name is always the UCS FXname portion of the filename and is constructed to facilitate sorting.

    • The $marker name is useful for naming objects that are groups of something, for example, a Random Container or Blend Container.

In the following example, the structures are all named using REAPER $Wildcards from data in the subproject. The section in blue is a preview of the structure that will be created in the Wwise project and the names that are automatically derived from the $wildcards.

Notice that the files will be rendered and then transferred to the Wwise Originals folder and will be automatically organized in subfolders with category and subcategory names. This helps with the organization of original files. Over the course of a project, this automatic naming can save a significant amount of time and reduce the incidence of spelling errors.

  7. Click Transfer to Wwise.

The files are rendered and include metadata that facilitates the next stage of the workflow: transferring files from Wwise to REAPER. Note that you can transfer files while Wwise is connected to a game and immediately hear the changes in the game.

Transferring Files from Wwise to REAPER

After you successfully transfer files from REAPER to Wwise, you might find that some sounds require further changes. To facilitate this, Audiokinetic has created Open Associated REAPER Project.

  1. If you haven't already, install Open Associated REAPER Project and run it from REAPER.

  2. In Wwise, right-click any Sound SFX object that has a source WAV file that was rendered in REAPER.

  3. In the shortcut menu, click Open Associated REAPER Project.

The REAPER project the file was rendered from opens, and the cursor is positioned at the start of the file.

  4. Modify the sound in REAPER, and then refer to Transferring Files from REAPER to Wwise to transfer the modified sounds back to Wwise.
